Today told me it was a time to be a colorful hippie, so I obeyed it. I woke up this morning, yoke lightened, but not weightless, after a very lonnnngg sleep-deprived week, and I had this strange desire to make a gossimer canopy around my bed with twinkle lights because I want to retain my childlike sense of wonder. Then I turned on We Added it Up by Sarah Worden and came across this cool photographer. The combination of all of these things resulted in this odd get-up. Currently, I am writing this post and continuing the boheme bourgeoise theme by munching on taxidermied vegetables from Earthfare (horrible dysphemism, eh? but it's the only way I can describe it). So yes. Here's to Saturday. Here's to not reading loads of film articles right away.

Even though I'm sick, look rough, and am about to take a nap, I figured I would bring you all some galactic love from Athens. A few months ago, I was determined to be spacey looking and constantly look like an extra from Back to the Future II (because 2015 is not that far away and we should ready ourselves for the transition to lots of spandex and shoes like these). So, finally this weekend I got to print a t-shirt that achieves that look. Now my nebula ring from Anthro finally has a companion in my closet and all is right with the world. This isn't as severe looking as I initially thought it would be, but it has a militaristic feel so maybe the edge comes from the idea that the future is foreboding? I don't really know.

Also, for all the photophiles out there, excuse the cut off feet, I know that is a photo no no.

Lastly, the title references this song. The sound doesn't really pair with it, but oh well.

This is a variation of the outfit I tried before deciding on the top one.

Part of me is not really partial to the typical "look-of-the-day" blog post, it seems oh so very "look at me" and I want to stray away from that. But I guess it's a rite of passage when one has a style blog, so I'll give it a whirl for a while to see what I think.

This idea was prompted for a few reasons 1) I finally figured out a way to take style pics that don't look like they belong on Myspace, 2) while driving to dinner I realized that I am really J. Crewing it up today and figured people might want to see it, 3) I will do absolutely anything to avoid preparing for a French composition tomorrow.

So it's your basic slouchy denim number with a messy side ponytail, socks with moccasins, and oversized glasses. The look is tied together with a smirk inspired by a guy my friends know who uses it to woo the ladies. How very Jim Halpert of him. So I decided to wear it too to see if it does anything from the other side of the spectrum.

Well that's it. Tell me if this is lame and I won't do it again.

Whoa. Some major inspiration magic just happened. I was taking a picture of some pretty things for fall when I started to notice a theme, animal related! I started taking away and adding and getting excited then I took the picture.

These are the items:

I suppose this theme of animals runs farther than the afternoon because of other things that have happened recently. For instance, I came upon a little kitten this morning on a walk and found some people who knew where to take it to find a new home. Then a few weeks ago my friend told me about this song Aminals which dictated the theme for a cd I made for another friend. Cool Stuff. Well okay that was my wierd little rant for the day. Welp this is my humble abode! Let me give you a little tour.

This is my foyer where people like to look at my barnacle lamp. I've shown it on other occasions throughout my blog history, but now it has a permanent place in the central part of my home.

This is my front mirror and table and my finished vest/jacket (vackest? I jest.) The table is complete with a copy of "A Waste of Time" by the team at kate spade. Come on by and flip through it, you'll get a kick out of it.

This is my living room, where people come and watch movies sometimes.

Then here is my shelf which has a nice little ledge at the top that you can't see that is fairly close to my bed and I fist bump it every morning for stability. We have a good relationship.

I'm sure more details of my home will arise as the year goes on, but here are the basics.

White Stuff That People Like.

This could be a potentially boring post, but I can't help but notice that I have a favorite: detailed white things. I think my obsession with interesting textures came from this guy who loves wearing neutral colors but all of them still look exciting. I've posted about the beauty of white before, but most of the pictures were forms of inspiration and not actually owned by me.

There is more detailed white stuff in my room than this which is a little wacko, but I thought I'd give a little sampling.

Don't you love pairing weird flavors together? I'm trying to expand my palate a little more in relation to my musical taste and my culinary tastes. So tonight I took a little inspiration from a meal I had at Farm 255 the other night and made a delectable cheese platter. The cheese is a Dutch chevre, then I added some yummy Georgia peaches topped with Valdosta pecans that are flavored with orange zest, cranberry and black pepper, and then a dash of honey. Boy oh boy, divine! And if my senses weren't already through the roof, I listened to some Tom Waits. I normally would pair a culinary experience with classical music or something very light hearted, but what the heck, let's make it really great. So, yes, this was my 8 oclock-instead-of-dessert. It's almost better than dessert in my opinion.

Well my dears, the summer has officially come to a close. It is the eve of my Junior year of college and I couldn't be more thrilled for it to be here. Much like the end of last summer, I am going to sum up how I did with my Summer Goals List that I made at the very end of April. My oh my how priorities can change in the matter of three and a half months! Clearly I didn't do some of the things, but there was method behind my badness. Here it goes, I hope you enjoy.

1. Attack my "Learn About This" folder.

Yes!! I attacked it in a more efficient way than I could have ever imagined.

Any of my good friends could tell you that I am a die-hard bookmarker on the computer. If my good ole Mac could sit down for an interview and speak its mind, it would say how weighted down it was with websites I have made note of in the past few years. So I discovered Pinterest and now most all of my websites I have relocated somewhere on there.

I did however break down midway, had a fit (because it practically took me all day to go through all of the sites), and just deleted my last page of websites and all of my "learn about this vocab". If I ever run across those words again (knowing most of them came from the mouth of Hamish Bowles, I do say it is rawther unlikely) then I will learn them organically and chronicle them into my everyday vocabulary at a natural pace. Not a major loss.

2. Learn about Graphic Design.

More or less I did learn more about this. I watched the documentary Helvetica whose primary focus was on the art of type design (changes how you look at everything!). I'm sure I subcosciously took in a lot of notes as far as layout design is concerned given my new devotion to the next point...

3. Read more Culture Magazines.

I most certainly did. If you hadn't noticed from my previous posts, I had a bit of a magazine awakening. I had always limited myself unknowingly to the biggies (primarily Vogue, Elle, Dwell, etc.) but I had never really explored past the genre of Women's Interests and Home to see what else was out there! For example, men's magazines are fascinating. I have read many a good article in Port like the one about the Hollywood Machine in the 30s-50s, another about the beauty of staying in rather than going out, great articles abound in International Men's Vogue like the feature on James Franco, and there was an interesting exposé on a certain kind of gun found all over pop culture in another mag that I cannot remember the name of.

You catch my drift. There is a heck of a lot out there and just as it is crazy to limit yourself by only learning about one field and nothing else, it is crazy to limit yourself to one section of the newsstand or bookstore. Think about it.

4. Have my Barista Friend make me a Latte at her New Job.

So sad this didn't happen! I fully intended to journey to the center of the state on a few occasions, but it just never seemed to work out between our schedules. Ala dear: this fall, you, me, coffee, soul-focused talks, movie watching, laughing our heads off. It will happen and I can't focus on it too much now because I will yearn for it much too much.

5. Make Über Flowy, Fun Clothing.

My initial idea was to recreate the French clothing I see time and time again at Worthwhile in Charleston. I put this task off a very long time (I just started making my garment last week!) but I am nearly finished with an interesting looking jacket/vest. The fabric I used was salvadged from an old skirt I had in middle school, which needed a facelift. So now it is in the making of being a modern, beltable piece that is lined with linen, love it!

6. Find an interesting backpack.

I didn't techncically buy any interesting backpacks, but I didn find one my sister got at her internship a few years ago. It does the trick when I want to wear modern clothing; it's black and simple and perfectly Kate. Raspberries.

7. Create and collect a lot of goodies for my new room.

This one exploded in the past month. Every day I would be out and about and see random things like children's toys and hand-made paper and say to myself, I can use that!. I ended up creating four paintings (3 of which are in my vest picture above), collected other art to sprinkle around the room, and my desk is a heck of a lot more beautiful than one would expect for a dorm. Another post with more details soon to come!!

10. Start doing monthly playlists on the blog.

Although they tend to come at the end of the month rather than as inspiration at the beginning, this did start happening. Here are the playlists for May, June, July. (Funny, I made my friends three mixed cds at the beginning of the summer last year, one for each of the months. Here is the picture of them.)

It may seem lazy that none of this happened, but I had a major focus change around the end of May.

You see, in my late teens I strategized my plans for learning in my early 20s:

There are two fields of thought people seem to devote their time to: the past and the present. I don't have a lot of time to do independent learning during school and I have a lot of things to cram into my brain before I enter the workforce/adulthood when I don't have nearly as much free time. I should focus on learning about things in the past as much as possible, and then when I am well grounded in all things old (film, literature, pop culture, news, etc.), I will focus on the day-to-day news of this dying world. This transition should occur when I am a grown up.

It's funny because I just thought there were two general fields of thought, but I didn't factor in another important one: the future. There are loads of intelligent people giving a lot of thought to what will be and how to prepare for it. I get really excited for my generation as well as generations to come and I had a major mental explosion when I started learning about innovators of today and what they are conjuring up for tomorrow. I pushed aside my focus on making antiquated notebooks, learning the history of England, and most importantly, I set aside a major project, writing a book, which didn't seem relevant anymore to my aesthetic or for the company my book would have been for.

So, phewww that was a long one, wasn't it? Well thank you for enduring all that hullabaloo and I wish that all of you going back to school have a purely wonderful experience this fall. Here's to the future: may we live it well and be flexible with change as it comes our way. xoxo

A Room with a Viewpoint.

Recently I've been exploring what a space can say about a person. I've found that just as the clothes on a person's back reflect his/her personality, so does a space say something about the way they live, because well, they live there.
When getting ready to set up my home for the fall, I have been looking for things that are punchy and make a statement. It's almost like I've been designing a set for a character, who is me, and I want to add specialized touches that bring light to who I am. This is the first time I've ever had my own place without roommates so it's new and exciting for me to have a space that gives off a singular expression of personality rather than a compromise between two distinct voices.

So basically, after painting like mad last week (which I discovered I love! I may buy and eisel for the room too so I can paint after long days) and reinventing items to make them unique (like the play animals I repainted for display), I am officially done planning my room, which I move into in a little over a week.

I think my space will give an air of playfulness yet calm, detailed but not overdone. I can't wait to share it with you when I'm all moved in! xoxo

Also, side note, I wanted to include the picture above of my new trompe l'oeil sandwich pencil case (isn't it fun?), but you may have thought at first glance I'm just randomly holding a sandwich. So, yes, no it's not a sandwich.

Everyday Beauty.

Life is so big and so exciting, isn't it? I feel like there are so many magical things happening in so many different places. Even if they don't scream at you to look or that they are important, when you are keen to their ways therein lies the treasure. I was talking with my dad today about this. He said for example he didn't like Seinfeld when he first watched it, but when you get to know the humor and personality of Larry David, you pick up on the specifics of the humor and it becomes so much more enjoyable.

This applies to every day beauty. When you are trying to understand the ways of our glorious Maker, sometimes it helps to see a part of his personality. For example, He is rawther creative. If you even get a small glimpse of the creations He makes, you see he is a God of big proportions. I was driving through my little hometown today, not expecting anything particularly grand, when all of a sudden I looked up at the painting of the day in the sky. I was in a particularly good part of the road near my neighborhood where the view of the sky is breathtaking, visible for miles and miles. I look up and I see the most perfectly fluffy clouds all in rows extending as far as my eyes could see. For the first time I actually stopped on the side of the road and just gazed for a bit. It got me thinking how wonderful He is and that He thinks a little town in Georgia is just as worthy of a beautiful skyline as Cortona or the poles. People in the creative field search day in and out for the world's idea of beauty. They will study it, move for it, and devote their lives to it. I myself have to travel a good half hour to look at beautiful hand-made paper or a store design worth oggling over. But the Lord gives us wonderfully detailed and hand crafted beauty to awe over day in and day out. The trick is recognizing the patterns in his work to really appreciate all that He has made. It also must be said, if He pays that much attention to creating a beautiful sky to show His handiwork, how much more is He already working through things in your life to reveal Himself to you?

I have just been in a major creating/photographing mood recently. I finally found an aperture setting on my camera that I like and the colors are much more in line with how I see things in my head. I had just gotten a floral scarf (Pictured two pictures above) and the pairing seemed a perfect interpretation of this other image in my mind. So I went searching for it and...

I found it! I had a hunch it was from the early years of my Teen Vogue obsession and I sensed it was from the fall season. So I look to September 2006 and there it was. Lola in her perfectly quilted floral vest and a lovely citrus colored top. The mind is certainly an incredible thing.

Future by Design.

I recently watched a very interesting film called Future By Design. In a nutshell, the movie is about a man who was interested in the future from the age of eight after watching the then futuristic movie Metropolis. I love some of the things he believes about the organization of a city and how it can impact a society. Here are some quotes by him:

"At a time, people thought that decisions of the majority were very close to reality. But there was also a time when the majority of people believed that the earth was flat."

"Any culture in the world today tries to educate people so they'll serve a function in that particular culture. People are conditioned to serve a purpose to an established culture."

"Value systems are distorted: if our environment is altered, so our behavior will be altered."

It's crazy to think that our thoughts are effected by visual culture and that our range of thought is rather limited by dominant interests of our society. I just thought you might all find this interesting. I hope you watch the movie, even though he does jump to conclusions in a few areas, his ideas are interesting and a lot different from the norm. Enjoy!

I am doing some computer cleaning and have started converting all of my saved blogs, music sites, etc. over to Pinterest. Praise the Lord! My computer and mind were getting quite junky. This summer has been dedicated to the concept of change. I have had lots of free time to think about the Lord, life, knowledge, beauty and the future and how they all correlate and which holds the most importance (the Lord obviously). Here are three shifts in lifestyle and focus.

My room went from this last summer...

To this. I have been cleaning, streamlining and focusing on the importance of minimalism (hence a copy of the Fountainhead on my apostrophe chair).

Side note. I'm not really a fan of the curtains like I thought I would be. They should have been lush and white like my sister suggested.

Then lastly, a table turning realization.

Although the things previously stated are all great, I have basically been over-indulging myself with all of my interests and I have found that they aren't nearly as satisfying as I would hope they could be.

I tend to find something I like, conquer it by learning about it wholly, then moving onto the next thing. I realized this is not a good or healthy way of existing because it can carry over into more important areas like my spiritual and social life. I am going to try to wean myself off of the things I used to rely on for support, i.e. beauty and knowledge, and instead focusing on friendships and reading the Bible and growing in relationships rather than furthering my brain. I can only take in so much information to a point where I am eventually wasting my time when I should be investing in other people. In the end, I want to look back on my life and see that I spent time appreciating the beauty that is all around me rather than a far off concept of it created in a studio somewhere across the world. So here is to shifting perspectives, making changes, and not being bound to a comfort zone.

Hello, all. Terribly sorry I've been so aloof recently. I had finals which took up loads of time this past month and for some odd reason my parent's house does not have the best wifi. So, alas, here I sit in a coffee shop. But I have something fun to tell you! I am embarking on an adventure with a new love: futurism. So this summer, I am taking a turn and learning about what is to come in regards to the music, art, and fashion industries.

To start off, I love the galactic look of certain kinds of tie-dyeing. For example, Mayaan Zilberman's lingerie from her brand the Lake and the Stars. I love how the overall effect almost like nebulas.

Then of course Christopher Kane's Spring 2010 collection was completely focused around this idea and I have fallen in love with the pieces all over again. I decided after seeing this collection and Mayaan's closet that I should dye my hair darker to better pair with futuristic clothing.

Here are some other glorious examples. Shabd does beautiful work with muted dyes and Agyness Deyn looks lovely in Paris with her dyed scarf (side note: Scott Schuman is to her left in the background).

So, in short, I will be doing some of my own experiments with dyeing soon and will share as soon as I start creating. Here's to supersonic style and nebular innovation!

So here is my official summer list for 2011. Some of the ideas are quite easy and others are difficult. For instance, attacking my "learn about this folder" will not be an easy feat. Do you know how many websites I've put off looking at? This also applies to culture magazines, graphic design, and making clothes. Lastly, the best of the best, and probably most time consuming but the most rewarding, a surprise project I'm working on that I plan to have completed by the end of the summer. I'm not going to speak a word lest I jinx it. So just keep your eyes peeled for goodness in August/September on Silhouette!

So, I was home this weekend and I found myself thinking of summer (which is only three weeks away, can you stand it?!). I began reminiscing via photos and videos from summers past and I came upon some images from last summer that are prettier texture-wise than I once thought. I took lots of photos last summer and had every intention of posting them and I never got around to it. Better late than never I suppose. I'm just going to go slightly wild. Here it goes.

Have any of you noticed this recent enthusiasm for the late 1800s? So many artistic people are referencing this time period as of late and I thought I should bring it into the light.

Robert James is a man after my own heart. He looks to the 1860s and the 1960s for inspiration with his menswear line on the Lower East Side. James' primary inspiration comes from Jessie James and Ringo Starr (as intentionally unconventional as that sounds) and he has certainly made a big impact on those that hate carpet bags and love their leather ones.

Langhorn Slim

Sure, this guy might look like any other Williamsburg hipster, but the fact is that he is in a band that has a twangy rugged version of folk music fit for a western. I heard them open for a concert last night and their music sounds like it would be perfectly set in a movie's modern interpretation of a saloon scene. With their live music I definitely got that vibe and the lead singer gave that impression as well with his vest, pocket watch, and carefully placed bowler hat.

Well, duh. This movie is set in the 1870s and would make Ralph Lauren proud with how perfectly layered and earth toned the cast was. I love the oversized coat that Hailee wore throughout the film even if her character meant for it to be purely functional.

I just watched the Virgin Suicides and despite the heavy subject matter and the sadness paired with it, the film is without a doubt one of the most beautiful films I have seen recently. I spent the entire movie screen shooting as many photos as possible for inspiration. So here are some of the reasons I am so intrigued by the work of Sofia.

I loved how many similarities there were between this movie and Marie Antoinette, which also starred Kirsten Dunst.

The color composition in both was very similar: light pinks and blues for the lively girls...

... while the more traditional elders donned classic reds and navys.

Sofia certainly showed her mastery of mixing florals in both films.

There were also a few scenes similar between the movies. Here is Kirsten in each film looking out the window reminiscing the memory of a past love.

Even the way that each movies concluded was strikingly similar. Both families left their home behind and the movie ends showing the emptiness, the only difference being that one home had slightly grander light fixtures.

So in short, I am very inspired right now and want to look for similarities in all of Sofia's movies, but alas, it is 2 in the morning. I shall just have to watch them next week. Well darlings, I entreat you to watch these films even if it's just for the sets and the costumes. You will be entranced I assure you. Be sure to dream of happy beautiful places like Versailles tonight, my sweets. Au revoir.

I've been watching this documentary today and it is positively fascinating. It's a project that has been going on for over 40 years documenting the lives of 14 British children since 1964. The project began when they were 7 and the documenters have conducted updates on their lives every 7 years since. Now the children are 54 and I love seeing what turns their lives have taken. I found the images from the children's youth to be very inspirational, particularly from when they were 7 and when they were 21 at their universities. Here is my favorite little boy (pictured to the left in the top photo) who is now a barrister and married to the daughter of an ambassador. (And the guy pictured in green below looks like he would fit in perfectly in a J. CREW men's catalogue today.)

1. Martha Stewart Weddings. This photo was taken in September at Martha's home in Bedford for her nephew's nuptials. My sister works for Martha's television show and she attended the event. She is pictured walking to the right in the image above. So lovely! The spread is in the current issue of Martha Stewart Weddings and I am quite excited about it. I love my sister and I love this photo. To die for.

2. Cecil Beaton. This photograph is one of my all time favorites ever taken. Even though it's black and white it doesn't loose any of it's flavor and it retains its sparkle after nearly 100 years after it was taken. Still so fresh and packed with potency. I love Cecil and I am so thankful he decided to photograph Lady Beaton in this way.

3. The only thing I know about this man is that his name is Miles Johnson. After I saw this image, I was so overwhelmed by the loads of textures and patterns that I never got around to reading the article about him. Such a shame. Mini new year's resolution perhaps?

4. Sea of Shoes. These are the parents of Jane Aldridge. Aren't they so chic? Just because of her mom's outfit I have started to wear my collared shirts buttoned all the way up with jewelry or neckware. I hope to be a part of a pair like this when I grow up!

5. The Sartorialist. This couple is so inspiring. They are so wonderful looking together. This image was the straw that broke the camel's back causing me to finally get those delicious L.L. Bean boots the girl is wearing (mine are in navy). It definitely encourages me that there are modern couples in the world that live in the city while maintaining a carefree persona and their sense of style.

6. Jody Rogac. This picture entranced me for at least a month and a half. It's just so rich looking with the colors and the lighting and this is another image I just want to hop into.

7. The Selby. I love this shot of Andy Spade. He is so perfectly dapper in his MaCallister boots and his tan velvet jacket. I think by the site of it he and Wes Anderson would be very good style buddies.

8. The Carswells. This couple went to my high school and after years of being together they got married this year. Their entire wedding album is absolutely to die for and this image I particularly love. The way it was composed it looks like a modern version of a rococo painting. Ravishing!

9. Katie Did. This dress and the lady who made it amaze me. Everything Katie has done and has made for her children is well thought out and absolutely beautiful. I want a dress like this in my size!

10. Governor's Island Jazz Age Lawn Party. I've talked about this event a few times before, but this image really captures the carefree nature of the party. I can't wait until the day I live in the city and this will be a part of my summerly routine.

11. Cup of Jo. Since I am still in the process of learning, I had no idea this was Jane Birkin when I first saw it on Mrs. Goddard's website. I kept looking at it though because I just found the girl so incredibly beautiful and I decided I wanted to be as effortlessly cool as she is. Lo and behold, she was so cool that Hermès named their most classic bag after her. To die for.

12. Katie Did. This cute party for Charlie the one year old is positively scrumptious. Very modern with his felt C hat and his C cake.

13. Cup of Jo. HILARIOUS. Her caption was "how genetics work". So clever.

14. Ashley Olsen. This dress is my absolute ideal so I included it. It's pure and simple with its crew neck, long sleeves, full length, and Badgley Mischka label. It's stunning. That is all I have to say.

15. Katie Did. How pretty is this photo? I remember it was a major faux pas in grade school to mix playdo, but this makes it look so fun! Plus I just loved this website when it was still going. You should explore it.

16. Tim Walker. I found this photo without knowing it was a Tim Walker, then I learned more about him and boy oh boy is he fantastic! He works for British Vogue mainly and I love the whimsicality of his work.

17. Chase Cohl. I featured Chase's band Weepaw a few months ago and I just love the brand they created. Very earthy, very Indian inspired. I also envy her headdress, I hope to make one just like it someday.

18. The Selby. This was the very first image that lured me into the wondrous website of the Selby. The symmetry of the image is what got me I think. I love how it's very classically captured, but then the man sets the image off balance with his presence.

19. Kate Spade. An ad from spring 2008, this image shows the playfulness of the label. In other images from the shoot, which was a "race car derby" theme, the back of one of the boy's jerseys is shown and it says "Andy", so cute.

20. Making the Grade. A movie from 1984 which really exemplified what it means to prep. I watched the movie very early on this year and this particular scene struck me. The tough guy on campus, pictured left, dons the school colors of his all boy prep school and it really sets the scene for how different the life of a WASP is.

21. I believe this is an old photograph from Vogue. Isn't it grand? I love the nonchalance of the lady and how well decorated the room is. There are so many layers and elements that I just want to jump inside of the picture.

22. The composition of this photo I find completely captivating. The image is of a friend of my friend J. Elquist and I am in love with his perfectly checked jacket and his stamped round carry-on.

23. The Selby. I know I keep posting photos by Mr. Todd, but I simply cannot get enough of him! I also cannot get enough of this window display he collaborated on and participated in, making his room out of the window. I don't even know what to say, it's totally brill.

24. Green Wedding Shoes. This engagement photo shoot inspired me for at least two weeks this fall as I kept going back to look at the beautiful plaids, the scenery, and this striking young couple.

25. The Selby. This is the living room of Kate and Andy Spade. I could eat this picture up because I adore all of the little details and all of the work that went into decorating their beautiful home.

26. This is a bit of a mystery photo. I believe this lovely gent is a friend of a friend whose image I stumbled upon, but I must say it was the girl he is with who caught my eye. I love her take on the preppy masculine-feminine look as well as her crested blazer.

27. The Sartorialist. Among many other amiable qualities that the maker of this acclaimed fashion blog has, he has brought me closer to a man I admire most, Hamish Bowles, who is pictured above. Isn't he dashing in his purple Wellies? I quite love him.

28. Tweed Run. I discovered this British event in conjunction with learning about the magazine Chap. The Tweed Run happens in the summertime and hundreds upon hundreds gather in thick layers of their traditional costume to enjoy a nice recreational bike ride.

29. Cup of Jo. Joanna Goddard's blog was a main inspiration for me in the first months of this year and this is one of the photos she posted. I cannot remember who took it, but it's stunning, yes?

30. The Open Road. This is a snapshot from a 1926 documentary of scenes of the British Isles. The director Claude Friese-Greene took two years to make the film and used his own two colour additive process to the pieces of film. Some of the scenes are just breathtaking like this one in Kensington Gardens (personal favorite), and another with a London city street filled with gentlemen and lads (which reminds me a bit of a scene from A Single Man). Here is the first part, you should watch it.

31. The Selby. This is was one of my favorite photographs of a couple showcased recently on Mr. Selby's website. The man, Vladimir Kagan, is a furniture designer and his wife Erica Wilson is a master embroiderer. They blended their two talents and created this chair. It warms my heart.

32. Partners and Spade. If you have read previous posts, you know that I love the Spades, but this seals the deal for me. Andy curated a Valentine's exhibit called "Sorrow for Sale: curated remnants of relationships that went bust". This photo from the event was my personal favorite. It is the perfect representation of what I have seen of Mr. Spade's sense of humor. Love it.

Alright, let's get started. This is the first installment of my absolute favorite photos from this year.

33. Pia Jane Bijkerk. Pia took pictures at the opening of the Anthropologie's first store in London. The thought and creativity that went into the store was over the top as is evident from the window installation made out of tea bags.

34. Happy Menocal. My sister told me about this artist and she is absolutely brilliant.

35. Speedy. Best movie from the 1920s hands down. The movie was shot on location in Manhattan in 1928 and shows scenes from Coney Island at its prime as well as a relatively peaceful Time Square.

36. Actually, I have no idea where I found this, but as I said in a previous post, I am a sucker for interesting fonts, and this one was too perfect not to keep as inspiration.

37. The Yellow Rolls Royce. This is decidedly one of my new favorite movies from this year. The cast is spectacular (Ingrid Bergman and Shirley MacLaine are in it so it has to be good), the scene is set all over Europe in the 1960s, and it was one of the original star-studded movies (think He's Just Not That Into You with a much better plot-line). It's a must see.

38. Negative Nancies. A humorous card that acts as a reminder for the

lumberjack in your life.

39. Pia Jane Bijkerk. This was an add campaign Pia did for a charity called Orange babies by House of Orange. I think it is just beautiful and it makes me want to join the cause!

So, first of all I must say I have lovely friends. Without them I could not create a lot of my visions. That being said, I had a project for a mass media class this past month and I got to create a spread as if it were for a magazine. Naturally I got very excited, spent a bit of time, and this was the result.

The model is my roommate Ala, for whom this post is named*, and the photographer is Elena, who I featured in a Valentine's shoot earlier this year. I also had the assistance of my sweet suitemates Amanda and Hailee. Overall, terrific experience. I am blessed beyond belief.

*Just for clarification, my roommate's name is pronounced "Ay-la" not "Ah-la". The pun in the title could be improved upon, but I think it is fitting. So, if you recognize her walking down the street, be sure to say her name correctly. Love you, Ailers.

The Wild Wes.

Naturally, I love all of the brown tones Mr. Anderson uses in his movies. He possesses a brilliant understanding of minimalism, but I also love his taste in clothing. Anderson seems to love a good velvet suit and he has no problem wearing it during the day, can make acorduroy suit look sleek and modern, and is a fan of the green suit which he pulls off rather elegantly. There is also a certain humor to the dressing of his characters, like with Jason Schwartzman in Rushmore. All in all, he has an excellent sense of characterization, making each character in his movie memorable and letting that carry over into his own style choices. Food, Ink.

Recently I have acquired some new hobbies, dare I say obsessions. There are two main ones.

First, I love color coordinated food. (If you are going to eat, you may as well have a theme, right?). It all started over the summer when my sister and I had a blue and orange themed dinner.

The food directly above is a sampling of yummy crackers with cheese, rhubarb jam, and peach butter I got from a local market this past weekend. Also almond soy milk, so good!

So my goal is to take more pictures of my food and have a colorful food diary.

Next, I love typography. I like the idea of interesting ways to capture the mood of a picture or of a time period. Like with this old exhibit poster (it's the 17th one), with this font website, and with these inspirational videos. So my goal is to get better at things related to the culinary and calligraphy and perhaps I will combine the two like in the picture above.

Hello there! Do you remember me? It's been a while since I have blogged and boy oh boy do I have things to show and tell you!! I need to fully collect my thoughts to properly step back into the blogosphere, but rest assued in the next few days I will start filling in the missing gaps to this documented life I lead.

Before all else, I'm going to give you a music fix that is well overdue. Meet Mitch Davis, a New York singer/songwriter whose song Perfect Timing was used as the main iPhone commercial theme. His stagename is Orba Squara and his new album is called The Trouble With Flying, which he paired with a cross country expedition through 15 states. Isn't Mitch cool? On his new album he does a Poker Face cover as well as an upbeat song called All Around the World which is currently on my top five favorites. I actually just went on my own cross-country excursion this weekend (by country I mean the southeast) and once I fold the exorbitant amount of laundry from the trip I will tell all. Love you all! I think it rawther important for anyone and everyone to incorporate simple pieces into their wardrobe. The surprising thing about basics is that they do not necessarily need to be boring, oh contraire! Basics can be the very most fun and the most wearable. My reoccurring basics of choice are striped things. Pleated skirts, vintage belts, boatneck knits, all great and certainly interesting. My main objective with clothing is to first be stylish but the close second is to be sensible. Have you ever looked back at family photos and cringed at the puffy 90s sleeves and the busy florals? Thinking ahead and avoiding what is current and fashionable may very well save you a lot of headache in the future and will make looking back at the past much less distracting.

The Process of My Vigor.

I will start learning about something I find interesting or I begin to contemplate the vastness of a subject I initially knew nothing about. Today it was the names for all kinds of men’s shoes and hats. So I begin researching what the differences are.

That gets me riled up. I realize I want to make a book about it. Then soon after the fire is stirred I am for some reason forced to embrace the comatose air of an economics classroom. In this case I am being forced to sit still and think slowly.

This will make me antsy. I quickly find that I am wasting my time on something that is very easy to understand and I would rather spend my time learning about how to start a company. I start writing notes about my company on my hand. My knees begin to shake. I shift constantly in my chair.

“suppppply. demmmmand. suppppply. demmmmand. suppppply goes uppp. demmmand goes downnnnnn.”

ANTSY. Ready to learn. Ready to start my real life doing the things I LOVE. Ready to see all of my dreams come true RIGHT AWAY!!!

Then I leave the classroom, reveal my new ideas about being a CEO to my friend Deborah, I jump up and down a few times, and I leave her to g0 back to my room and learn.

Once I sit down I have a million thoughts a minute and the tabs on my safari are flying all over my computer. One of two things happen: One. my computer can not handle my enthusiasm so it shuts down or Two. as I reach a peak of wanting to know about all of these things, I realize I have no means of accessing all of the books that I want to read. I see that each costs $30 on Amazon and I am not willing to pay that amount for multiple books.

So my excitement whittles down to a one-dimensional emotion of fervor and then I take a nap.

The Inimitable Nature of Menswear.

I am on overload for all things menswear and fall and handsome. There are so many incredible sites that showcase the various dimensions of my aesthetic and I simply must share them with you. Although many people say that menswear is boring, I must beg to disagree with them. On the surface, a jacket might just look like any other jacket, but a skilled menswear designer pays attention to the details of their garments so that their customers will subtly stand out among other men. These details can range from the intricate staining of a brogue to the creation of a perfectly wrinkled J-shaped pant (see Geoffrey Young). All of these little design choices come together to form what we all know and love as menswear. I hope you enjoy looking at the work of these designers as much as I have. xx

Brooklyn Circus. A menswear company that mixes the staples of a classic gentleman's wardrobe with the freshness of Brooklyn street style. The store's founder, Ouigi also known as "the Bearded Man" is the epitome of what his store stands for and he endeavors to stick to a slow and steady "100 year plan" for his store.

Geoffrey Young Design. The man is a sartorial genius. He doesn't wear color but every piece of clothing that he wears is so well made that it doesn't matter. He casts his own belt buckles and hand picks his leathers for the bags and belts in his collection. Give his collection a looksy and get a peek into his phenomenal closet.

Morris. I can barely contain my enthusiasm for this brand based out of Stockholm. It is comprised of well designed preppy staples and their fall look book takes you to another world of Monegasque glory. It's definitely worth dreaming about and I highly suggest you pour over this site.

Florsheim. An American footwear brand that prides itself on extreme quality and great design. The shoes below are Duckie Brown by Florsheim which were designed by Daniel Silver and Steven Cox. Might I saw they are doing a phenomenal job. Take a look.

I think it absolutely pertinent that we as Americans fully own our language. By this I mean we need to acquaint ourselves with as many words as possible because if we don't, who else will? So I am going to start doing a series of vocabulary lessons in the next few weeks, so be prepared to be a voracious word fiend! Lykke Li. She is Swedish and Indie and before you roll your eyes at the fact that all I ever post is this kind of music, do listen to her. She mixes in a lot of classical elements with violin and cello with some more basic instruments like the kazoo, a child's toy accordion, and a stick hitting a fence. She also incorporates some pop and electronic elements which is apparent in her collaboration with Kanye West called Gifted. You might have also heard her song Possibility on the New Moon soundtrack. My favorite song of hers she sang in a take away show on LaBlogotheque called Dance Dance. So unique she is. So by all means, check her out.

Summer Breezed By.

Well my darlings, the summer is quickly coming to a close, at least the more relaxing portion is, but I wanted to give you an update on how my goals for the summer panned out. I did in fact accomplish most of what I set out to do, and for the things I did not finish, I certainly gave them a whirl. So here is the list and I hope that you all got to fulfill your wishes for the summer as well. xoxo

1. Sew Aprons.

This one took a while, but was certainly the most fulfilling. I made them for three of my sweet friends who just moved into a beautiful blue house together. They made a nice pancake and waffle breakfast the other day for our friends and they wore their aprons, so cute.

2. Go to Labels Frequently.

For those of you that live in the Atlanta area who have not heard of Labels and I have not told you about it, I am deeply sorry I have wronged you. I am sorry because this is the best designer consignment shop in Buckhead. I have found so many great things at Labels since I heard about it in January and it is definitely a shop worth exploring. Since going there, my sister has found a pair of Salvatore Ferragamo shoes for next to nothing and I have found a handmade Kimono in the sale section and a Yves Saint Laurent couture gown (which I kick myself for not getting) for a mere $300. Straight from the runway in Paris. Crazy. So these are two of my finds. The top shoes hold a striking resemblance to my beloved Stubbs so I felt obliged to buy them.

Just go. That is all I have to say.

3. Read like Mad.

Okay. This one I have a good excuse for. I began to read these fantastic classics with every intention of finishing them, but they were just soooo booring. F. Scott has written much better stories than This Side of Paradise. The Great Gatsby I could handle, but other than the ivy league life that awaited Amory Blaine, there were no redeeming qualities in the book to keep me awake. Brave New World, a little too much like all of the other futuristic books written in the first half of the 20th century. It just reeked of thoughts about a dim future and I am already reminded of that in the news as it is. As for you Mr. Joyce, another day my friend, we shall meet another day and I am sure you will not daunt me so. Also in the stack pictured above is the Diving Bell and the Butterfly. That one I liked. The story was compelling and the imagery was fantastic. Bravo, Monsieur Bauby, you are remembered and loved.

4. Learn to play these instruments: Harmonica, guitar, banjo.

This one I did not take advantage of as much as the others. I did try my hand at the harmonica and can play a mean solo of "Piano Man" and also some bluesy tunes, but that is the extent of it. I didn't learn the other two, but I did find a really cool looking banjo pin in my mom's jewelry box and I consider that an accomplishment in and of itself. This is just a picture of me in Charleston serenading a bird with my harp.

5. Be employed.

I had the grand opportunity to work at J. Crew this summer. My coworkers were fantastic as was my manager Terry pictured above. He is a perfect example of a refined modern gentleman and I am so honored to be a part of the J. Crew family.

6. Grow Longer Hair by eating peanut butter (protein!).

Well, fortunately even without gorging myself on peanut butter, my hair did grow. Hooray!

7. Take more pictures and make a movie.

I did take a LOT of pictures and boy was it fun to take them! I went on loads of adventures with family and friends and I couldn't ask for more. Here are the videos I made this summer and there are more to come so stay tuned!

Well, that concludes the list and I suppose this post concludes the summer. I start my fall classes tomorrow and I am onto a whole new list of goals to accomplish. Here's to starting fresh and accomplishing dreams.

What if the next time you did some deep cleaning instead of calling it a chore or a bore you called it an adventure? Well the other day I had myself a little adventure going through drawers and sorting through memories and I came upon some rawther exquisite things. My sister Elaina has a terrific eye for all things beautiful and well-made, so in turn, she has been blessed with the gift of creating the beautiful as she did on a trip in Italy last summer. She had a metal-working class where she thoughtfully made me a necklace of charms of the iconic symbols of Hermés. In that same class she also made a galvanized gelato spoon and a toothpaste cap. These are little things that may be of no consequence to someone else, but they really raised my spirits.

I also found some little treasures that she had found at the markets, like a little leather coin purse, which was filled with a crumpled Italian newspaper, and I rediscovered one of the oil paintings that she sent home. Oh the joys of trips abroad. I can't wait for my own explorations and for the little trinkets that I will get to bring back.

They are quickly becoming an indie favorite across Europe and on this continent with songs like cat piano, i sing i swim, and lionface boy. The lead singer Sindri Sigfusson has been called "the Icelandic Beck" if that gives you an idea of what they are like. So, I entreat you, lend them your ears.

I just love the look of these wedding/engagement pictures. I'm a sucker for the hipstery touches like the turntable and I am loving that the guy is wearing an original penguin shirt! It may only be the tail-end of July, but according to the world of Vogue, preparations for the incoming fall are well underway. There are so many lovely options that are starting to come out and I simply must share my favorites. Right now I'm obsessed with riding pants, like these from J. Crew that I just got, and lovely simplistic neutrals. The other day I completely streamlined my closet and I am left with the uniform palate of navy, light blue, khaki, black, and white. This pink shirt will probably be the only pop of color I wear for the rest of the year other than a pair of citrine woolen ankle socks! Golly, don't you just love fall? Grant Lee Phillips. You may or may not recognize the name, but you more than likely will know him as the no-name troubadour of Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls. He was only in 19 episodes believe it or not, but boy did he make an impact. He started his first band in 1993 called Grant Lee Buffalo which was a little more rocky than his more recent solo labels. His newest EP is called Little Moon, which he recorded in just 4 days, reflects his quintessential soulfulness. His other most recognized hits are Mona Lisa, Lilly-a-Passion, and Honey Don't Think. Latest summer obsession: delectable fresh-picked berries. My dad has been on a berry pie rampage due to his discovery of blackberry bushes near his office. Weepaw. The band consists of brother and sister Liam and Chase Cohl and their friend Duncan Davies who form this hushed voice of an indie band. I first discovered them through Chase who was featured on the Selby and who had a very distinctive aesthetic in home decor and personal style. The music itself captures the laid back California Dreamin' of the 70s with its members looking towards Joni Mitchell and Neil Young as inspirations. The best representations of the band in my humble opinion are Coconut Massacre and Shanti because they exude that Haight Ashbury kind of vibe. The band has since dissolved with the two boys joining the Canadian country band the Treasures while Chase has taken on other creative endeavors with her headpiece/jewelry company called Littledoe. Although they no longer perform together, the music the group formed still gives off that pure soft-spoken magic. Lend them your ears.

Well, I've at least marked one thing off of my summer list. I accomplished #7, make a video. Now the video isn't very long, but I tried to incorporate some cool elements. The color palate is mainly blue and green and then I have a pop of red in every shot. Sounds a little like Amélie, no? It's sort of hauntingly beautiful with the song, but I feel they come together well. (Oh and the couple towards the end were my mom and dad, so I promise I'm not being a creeper.) So here it is. Random Thought: worn out.

What do you wear out? This isn't a typical style question of mine. My question is what stuff do you wear out to the point that they are no longer functional because you spend the bulk of your time around them? This is a little theory I'm working on that might not apply to all things, but does apply to some. I think a person can begin an introspective search of who they are and what they are passionate about based on external things that they wear out the fastest.

For instance, my sister loves the new and different and exploring uncharted places. Since the day she was born, she needed to go see a new place to be visually stimulated and contented. So because she has this innate desire to travel and continually keep moving, she wears out every pair of shoes that she has ever owned. Most all of them have holes. She also has one of the strongest relationships with the Lord that I have ever known and therefore she has worn out multiple Bibles to the point where the pages are falling out.

As for me, I can only think of a few less significant things that I have worn out. There is one spot on the couch that I have sat on since I was two. The spot is the nearest comfortable spot to the television. This is because I am obsessed with anything visual and auditory. So, over time, I have sat in that same spot so much that the stuffing of the sofa is nearly exposed. That is the mark of a die hard media fanatic. I have also worn out my very favorite leather satchel to the point where the strap is almost in two pieces just because it is my most ideal bag. Then out of all of my magazines the one that is the most yellowed is the one that I have brooded over the most, the February 2006 issue of Teen Vogue. I love practically every spread in it and I have used it as a reference for many-an-outfit. I'm guessing I may even wear out this computer one day because I am on it terribly too much which is not something I am proud of at all. From all of these things, I am not amused or satisfied with the mark I am currently making so from that I know I need to change my priorities a lot from where they are right now.

As much as I would like to change what I am passionate about based on what I wear out, the true test is what I wear in my heart and that goes for all of you as well. These external things are testaments of who you truly are and they are capable of revealing the condition of your heart. Your kids will know from the state of your office if you were a workaholic or not and they will know your character from the words you exercise the most. Keep this idea in mind as you go through your daily routine. Make note of what you spend the utmost time with and give it a good thought if that is how you want to be remembered. Just a thought.

This is my new random thought series. Many of you know I have lots of these so it just makes sense to let them out into the void.

Do any of you ever think about how you came to like the things that you do? Well I just did and I realized most all of my favorite things in life I have encountered completely by chance. These favorite things range from the small favorites shown to me by close friends to the big things shown by those I have never met. If it weren't for these people and instances, I wouldn't know all that I was missing! So here are my mini thank you notes. Enjoy xx.

-To Lauren- Thank you for telling me in ninth grade that dark chocolate was better than milk chocolate. It is.

-To JD- I have still yet to meet you Sir, but thank you for showing me and telling me that menswear is interesting. You were right. Subtlety in appearance is much more fascinating than flamboyance. You are wise beyond your years.

-To the librarian at my little private school- Thank you for not having a copy of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe available. I chose to read Peter Pan instead for my Literature project. Now it is my very favorite book.

-To Katherine (a friend of a friend with a photography site I saw three and a half years ago)- If it were not for you, I may have never listened to Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois by Sufjan Stevens. It was the first song that got me hooked on alternative music and it changed my ideas about music completely.

-To the sweet exchange student in Cortona that told my sister to watch Amélie and Diving Bell and the Butterfly- Thank you. We did. We loved them.

Can you think back to any little things you have come to love because you learned about them in passing? Give it a thought and send out those thank yous. The recipients will be refreshingly surprised by your acknowledgement of their impact.

DeVotchKa. Interestingly enough, my friend just put this on a list for me to listen to out of 11 other artists. Then today, I was listening to the wonders of the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack, which somehow I haven't gotten around to do since I watched the film years ago, and lo and behold, DeVotchKa did basically the whole thing! So without further ado, I shall introduce you to this magnificent ensemble. The name "devotchka" comes from the book A Clockwork Orange whose characters infused the Russian language with English, which they called Nadsat. DeVotchKa in this language simply means "girl". The group sites Greek, Romani, and Slavic music as their influences, which is very apparent in tunes like Head Honcho and Stizzalo. They also dabble in more folksy sounding pieces like You Love Me and some beautifully arranged piano music with Dearly Departed. So дать им послушать. (that means "give them a listen" in Russian).

I surprisingly have a new found appreciation for, of all things, Napoleon Dynamite. Granted, it is a rather slow film and the humor is extremely dry, but the visuals for the opening credits are fresh and stunning. That is because Napoleon's own Aaron Ruell who played Kip did the photography for the movie. His subtle humor and attention to simplicity in color set the tone for the film and he uses similar elements in his own photographs and commercials. It's a very distinct kind of funny which taps into the drabber looks of the 70s and 80s and is saturated with such banal that you can't help but give a chuckle, just a little one. So be sure to give his portfolio a looksy, this guy has some great skills.

Nothing quite beats a good day at the beach. I have gotten to spend this week with my family in Seaside and Destin, Florida and boy is it lovely! There are so many brightly clad children and everything seems to be cast in hues of blue and tan. One place that is especially fun to visit is Modica's Market, which has to-die-for red velvet cake and was frequently featured in the movie the Truman Show. Next door to the market is the quaint Sundog Books which is one of my favorite parts of Seaside, and upstairs is the extensive record library of Central Square Records. There were hundreds of gems like the latest from Coconut Records, good stuff. Overall, you simply must visit this part of Florida, just prepare your eyes for the perfection of what will be your new favorite sea haven.

Kitty Daisy and Lewis. A family of musicians that is inspired by the likes of Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, and Louis Armstrong (that's a lot of Louis). They prefer to make all of their music on recording equipment from the 40s and 50s so the tracks retain that raw natural talent of theirs. These three Brits have covered every song from Canned Heat's Going Up the Country (which was the unofficial anthem of the Woodstock Festival) to Johnny Horton's 1958 hit Son of a Gun, from I Got My Mojo Working by Muddy Waters to Honolulu Rock-A Roll-A by Moon Mullican. They are quite the well-listened bunch and you should check them out.

It is such a bittersweet moment to write this post. Although I am thrilled that my letter-to-the-editor was published in the July issue of Vogue, it makes my heart ache all over again knowing that such a great man with such potential is no longer here. Alexander was such a passionate being, but seeing his countenance and his eyes reinforce how much I wish I could have been his friend and how much I wish I could have been there for him in his sadness. Countless people admired and respected him and countless are as shocked as I am that he wanted to escape the beautiful world that he was surrounded by.

What a lovely homage written for one visualist by another. In Hamish Bowles' piece, McQueen's life and success were as vividly depicted and given as much detail as he put into his georgette gowns. I have been following the McQueen brand from the beginning, and this tribute made me feel a part of his world, with weekends at the Hilles estate accompanied by the aesthetic nurturing of Isabella Blow. Thank you for publishing such a heart warming article on my beloved Scotsman.

This manifesto, which was posted on the Chap magazine website, I find as hilarious and tongue-in-cheek as Diana Vreeland's "Why Don't You?" column. The editor of Chap, Gustav Temple, does an impeccable job of applying the mentality of these rules to his every day life and he is quite the gent because of it. Give the list a look, be enlightened, and be amused.

1 THOU SHALT ALWAYS WEAR TWEED. No other fabric says so defiantly: I am a man of panache, savoir-faire and devil-may-care, and I will not be served Continental lager beer under any circumstances.

2 THOU SHALT NEVER NOT SMOKE. Health and Safety "executives" and jobsworth medical practitioners keep trying to convince us that smoking is bad for the lungs/heart/skin/eyebrows, but we all know that smoking a bent apple billiard full of rich Cavendish tobacco raises one's general sense of well-being to levels unimaginable by the aforementioned spoilsports.

3 THOU SHALT ALWAYS BE COURTEOUS TO THE LADIES. A gentleman is never truly seated on an omnibus or railway carriage: he is merely keeping the seat warm for when a lady might need it. Those who take offence at being offered a seat are not really Ladies.

5 THOU SHALT ALWAYS DOFF ONE'S HAT. Alright, so you own a couple of trilbies. Good for you - but it's hardly going to change the world. Once you start actually lifting them off your head when greeting, departing or simply saluting passers-by, then the revolution will really begin.

6 THOU SHALT NEVER FASTEN THE LOWEST BUTTON ON THY WESKIT. Look, we don't make the rules, we simply try to keep them going. This one dates back to Edward VII, sufficient reason in itself to observe it.

The summer is here and that means one thing, time to redecorate. I've been hanging pictures, draping my dress form, and viewing various sites to determine what direction to go in for my room. One in particular is a shoe company called Keller whose spring/summer shoot drove me to minimize and streamline to a color palette that is understated and cohesive. The mood of Django Reinhardt's music contributed to the overall look as well as the items I salvaged from my sister's room like the bibb necklace and her barnacle inspired lamp which she made (bravo, sis). All of these things come together to form a space that finally has a homey, eclectic feel. Welcome home, Jo, welcome home.

I've been learning a bit about gentlemen and magazines recently and I dare say, in modern day the latter does not seem to be helping out the former one single bit. There are countless articles that are pure garbage, and very few magazines are feeding the mind and soul with intelligent thought. Back in the day, men's magazines would feature the writing of great men like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway that were thought provoking and were beneficial for the day. It just doesn't make sense to me. We raise our standards constantly with each passing year. Baseball records are beaten and health regulations are increased. What about the bar set for a gentleman? Shouldn’t the standards continually rise proving that men are becoming better learners, better educators, and are improving what it means to be a man?

I feel like it is not too much to ask that men are given material that is beneficial and not so consumerist driven. That's all.

Little Joy. This trio combines great harmony, beautiful vocals, and sweet sounding acoustic guitar that makes the perfect setting for a refreshing chill session. Fabrizio Moretti, center, the lead singer of the Strokes, got together with Rodrigo Amarante, lead singer of Los Hermanos and Orquestra Imperial, and Binki Shapiro to create this sensational side project of a band. The chillest of their chill songs is Unattainable and their most peppy tunes are How to Hang a Warhol (the beginning of the music video references this strange promo done by Andy in the 70s) and No One's Better Sake. It all sounds like a better version of something that would come from Brushfire Records. Give them a listen.

I have recently discovered a French design company called Smarin, that features some very innovative, modern furniture. The collections include Smarin's Livingstones, Mobileshadows (shown above), Livingislands, and Liquid to name a few. All of the products are designed by Stephanie Marin who strives to bring nature back into every day living. Certain items, like Liquid, are actually phosphorescent so they are great for the outdoors or for late night reading. Incroyable, no?

Up. This movie was the greatest. I especially loved the musical score by Michael Giacchino, which is what this Tune Tuesday will be about. The Up soundtrack harkens back to the 30s with its beautiful sounding horns and violins in the song Married Life (and you can’t help but smile with crackly sounding tunes like The Spirit of Adventure). Giacchino is known for a couple of theme songs and television scores, like Lost and Alias, but also did other Pixar tunes like Ratatouille. I hope you enjoy his work as much as I do!

I bet you haven't discovered it yet, but I am a sucker for old movies. One in particular that my mom and I discovered last spring is the film Lovers and Lollipops. Now, the film may seem like any old 50s flick, but not so. The director Morris Engel was actually the first to make a full length film with a home-made handheld camera. He did not like the constricting feel of oversized movie cameras, so he tinkered with one of his regular film cameras to have video taking capabilities. Talk about a smart man. So, the final result was this film as well as his other documentary-like movies Little Fugitive and Weddings and Babies. Huddie Ledbetter. Also known as Lead Belly, Huddie was a folk singer of the 30s and 40s who paved the way for the genre of folk as well as rock and many others. Lead Belly wrote the song House of the Rising Sun, which was later recorded by the Animals in the 60s. Interestingly enough, his hit Goodnight Irene was believed to have contributed to his early release from prison at one point. He played the 12 string guitar as well as 6 other instruments and has inspired many other artists, like Van Morrison who referenced Huddie in the song Astral Weeks. Lend him your ears.

Well now. The past three days have been spectacular to say the least. I'll go backwards and lead up to the most exciting thing which will probably make me giddy for the next four years.

Wednesday (today)- started prepping for the sewing I’m going to start for the summer. It’s a bit of a mess as is apparent with my pile of fabric. I also got the first of my summer reading, This Side of Paradise, can't wait to dive in.

Tuesday- I got a summer job! I will be working at J. Crew and am extremely excited. I also got bangs, so now I can look like a hipster (even though I loathe that word) any day of the week.

Monday- This is the big one. I found out that a letter I sent to Vogue is going to be published in the July issue!!! I wrote about their tribute to Alexander McQueen and it will be in the section Talking Back. It is such a great honor and I don’t know what to do with myself. Mumford and Sons. It’s a harmonious blend of folk and alternative which makes for a perfect summer soundtrack. The group started in London believe it or not and are now on their second world tour. Among their most catchy songs are Caves, Little Lion Man, and Winter Winds. Check them out.

Summer Whims.

The summer is officially here and I am vowing not to be lazy. I am going to do lots of creative, crafty things and go on lots of adventures. I have made a list for myself of all that I am going to do in my (100) days of summer, so here it is. If you have any other creative ideas of what you do to stay occupied leave a comment and I will definitely take it into consideration.

Also on the list is to read every Vogue magazine I can get my hands on, to learn as much about music as I can, and to watch more classic movies like City Lights. Here’s to a productive summer!

Komakozie and Mr. O'Hara

The Big Bounce. I first discovered them on the Ella Lounge website where I heard a more upbeat version of their hit Ms. Suzie in a video. The music is a perfect blend of the two band members’ styles: Brendan O’Hara, a soulful gent that draws inspiration from his grandfather who was a “boogie-woogie pianist”, and his friend, Komakozie, a Floridian that prefers beat-boxing and R&B. Together, they form a modern, jazzy band fit for a speakeasy or a dock in Miami. Check them out.
